Thursday Thoughts for Parents | "Because He Cares for You"

This post is based on C.J. Mahaney's sermon, Because He Cares for You, given on September 17, 2017.

Part of the Christian life is learning to like what God likes and want what God wants. One of the things God loves is humility. He smiles on His people when their lives are characterized by humility. Our culture doesn’t understand this. Because they refuse to glorify God, they tend to hate humility. Would you say you appreciated what God appreciates this week? CJ directed our thoughts to humility as the anecdote for pride manifesting as self-indulgent arrogance or wallowing self-pity. The Bible says we all struggle with pride. The question is how it manifests in each of us. The prideful person is characterized by carrying self-imposed burdens. This week, CJ reminded us from 1 Peter 5 that there is hope for the person that has carried burdens if they will give them God.

Read 1 Peter 5:5-7

  • What does the temptation of being wise in your own eyes look like in your life? Do you lean toward arrogant boastfulness toward others or do you wallow in self-pity thinking you are being unfairly treated?
  • Would you say you are characterized by “humbly casting or arrogantly accumulating” anxieties and cares?
  • CJ pictured humility as a garment we get to wear. What would others see you doing if you were “clothed in humility”? How could you reflect humility in the ways you are serving your family?
  • Spend time praying with your kids this week asking God to relieve you of burdens you have been carrying.
