Thursday Thoughts for Parents | "Supporting Those We Send"

Thursday parenting featured

This post is based on C.J. Mahaney's sermon, Supporting Those We Send, given on January 28, 2017.

This past Sunday, pastor CJ showed us that the most meaningful way we can serve our missionaries and church planting teams is by regularly praying that God would honor their proclamation of the Gospel. This high regard for consistent prayer does not cheapen other ways of supporting those we love. Giving financially, writing encouraging letters, etc., are all wonderful means of encouragement and support. But prayer more than anything else acknowledges our complete dependence on God for His Kingdom to advance. It’s prayer that God would save souls and establish churches that unites our hearts with those laboring for the sake of the Gospel. And it is God’s delight in honoring His Word that should motivate us to pray often for the Gospel to move forward speedily, mightily, and effectively.

Read: 2 Thessalonians 3:1-5

Discussion Questions:

  • What do learn from this passage about Paul’s relationship to God and His Word?
  •  Make a list of places where you would like to see God’s word honored? Does this list reflect your current prayers? If not, be encouraged, God is calling you to a richer prayer life.
  •  Do you find consistent prayer challenging? How can you ensure that you are keeping your pledge to faithfully pray for those we send out?
  •  Spend some time praying for the Grangers in Ethiopia and for the Berrys and the church planting team in Arkansas. Be mindful of the different points of opposition they may face in your prayers for them.
