Sermon Summary | "The Mysterious Gospel"
This past Sunday, we had the joy of welcoming Dave Odom, who serves as the lead pastor at Redeeming Grace Church in Franklin, Tennessee. Dave shared with us how the Lord providentially led his family into relationship with CJ and others from Sovereign Grace, and eventually they attended the Pastors College. After PC graduation and a church-planting residency with Cornerstone Church of Knoxville, Redeeming Grace Church was planted in 2013. Dave and his wife, Mary Beth, have four children: Anna Grace, Jackson, Hudson and Jude.
Dave preached from Ephesians 3:1-13, highlighting two aspects about the mystery of Christ (3:4). Dave first pointed us to the mystery revealed in verses 1-6 as well as the mystery proclaimed in verses 7-13.
In the first point we learn that the mystery of Christ has been revealed: “This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel” (Eph 3:6). Both Jews and Gentiles are created as “one new man” in Christ and through the power of the gospel (cf. Eph 2:15).
Secondly, we learned more about this mystery that is proclaimed by Paul. The “mystery hidden for ages” is proclaimed to show that “through the church the manifold wisdom of God” might be on display before the “rulers and authorities in the heavenly places” (Eph 3:9-10). Here, the role of the church and the cosmic plan of God are on display.
