Sermon Discussion Questions | "Deflating the Puffed Up Church"

Engaging the Text:

Read 1 Cor 3:18-23 alongside 1 Cor 4:6-13. What are the similarities? How does the first passage provide context to the meaning of the second? Discuss.

Engaging Our Faith:

A. C.J.’s two main points from this sermon were: (1) Grace produces humility and (2) grace prepares us for suffering. How have you tangibly seen this in your own walk in faith?

B. In his sermon, C.J. showed how this passage challenges us to rethink our ambitions and expectations in light of the gospel. How can the gospel remind you of your identity in Christ while you pursue your godly ambitions? Moreover, how does the gospel keep your expectations of such ambitions biblically balanced?

Engaging Our Culture:

In this passage, the apostle shows that the truly “spiritual” person is a paradoxical phenomenon: the weak display God’s strength (2 Cor 12:9); foolishness displays God’s wisdom (1 Cor 1:18-19). How does this contradict the way the culture presents a “spiritual” person? How do you think this true Christian spirituality provides an evangelistic platform to display and declare the gospel?
